Hope Noakes

Hope Noakes is a California-based artist, inspired by North and South American native cultures. She is inspired to think that her work may broaden awareness of these cultures and spread their beautiful images.

Using charcoal as her primary medium, Hope showcases harsh, contrasting shadows with glimpses of color to express the notion of beauty underneath a shield of black and white. Commenting on the significance of South American textiles, Hope paints and draws unconventional textile-based patterns, hoping to share how she is influenced by the beauty found in traditional garments that hold so much purpose. Culture thrives, and humans capture it in many beautiful ways.

“I got into drawing and painting this subject matter because I was fascinated by indigenous cultures and their practices. This fascination grew when I started to pursue Art History as a major in community college. Taking classes on the ancient americas and the anthropology of native North America - I knew that this was what I was passionate about. Not only learning about their cultural aesthetic, but trying to understand the reasons behind certain rituals and cultural practices. I graduated with an honors degree in Art History from UCLA in 2020.”
